Francescatti,
Zino (René),
brilliant French violinist b Marseilles, Aug. 9, 1902; d. La Ciotat, Sept.
17, 1991. His father, a Frenchman of Italian extraction, was a violin
pupil - of Paganini; prodded by him, Zino Francescatti appeared in public
as a violinist at the age of 5, and played the Beethoven Violin Concerto
with an orch. at 10. In 1927 he went to Paris, - where he began teaching
at the Ecole Normale de Musique; also conducted occasional performances of
the Paris sym. organization Concerts Poulet. Between 1931 and 1939 he made
several world tours. He made his U.S. debut on Nov. 1,1939, with the N.Y.
Phil.
