Francoeur, Francois, French violinist and composer, uncle of Louis-Joseph Francoeur; b. Pans, Sept. 8, 1698; d. there, Aug. 5, 1787. He was a member of the orch. of the Paris Opéra, a chamber musician to the King, and one of the “24 violons du roi.” Conjointly with his inseparable friend Francois Rebel (1743—53), he was inspecteur adjoint, then director of the Opéra (1757—67) and Superintendent of the King’s Music (1744—76). He wrote 2 books of violin sonatas; produced numerous operas (in collaboration with Rebel).
