Goetz, Hermann (Gustav), German composer; b. Konigsberg, Dec. 7,1840; d. Hottingen, near Zurich, Dec. 3, 1876. He studied in Berlin (1860—62), with von Bulow in piano and H. Ulrich in composition. In 1863 he took the post of organist at Winterthur, Switzerland; then lived in Zurich; gave private lessons; conducted a singing society. His most famous work is the opera Der Widerspenstigen Zdhmung, based on Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew, which was given in Mannheim, Oct. 11, 1874. His other works include the opera Francesca do Rimini (Mannheim, Sept. 30, 1877; unfinished; 3rd act completed by Ernst Frank); incidental music for Widmann’s play Die heiligen drei Konige (Winterthur, Jan. 6,1866); Piano Concerto (Basel, Dec. 1, 1867); Violin Concerto (1868); Sym. in F (1873); choral music; String Quartet (1865); other chamber music; several pieces for piano; songs.
